The Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday, Aug. 10, formally launched the adjusted curriculum for Kindergarten to Grade K to Grade 10 (K to 10) under the K to 12 Program.
Called the MATATAG curriculum, the recalibrated K to 10 curriculum is guided by the DepEd’s new battle cry of the basic education sector which is “MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa.”
“The review and revisions fulfill the Department of Education's pledge to evaluate the K to 12 program following its initial implementation,” Vice President and Secretary of Education Sara Duterte said during the MATATAG K to 10 curriculum launch at the Sofitel in Pasay City.
“This curriculum will be integral to DepEd’s MATATAG Agenda, unveiled in January this year,” Duterte said.
The MATATAG Agenda was launched as DepEd’s new direction in resolving basic education challenges when Duterte delivered the Basic Education (BER) 2023.

DepEd’s track remains to be “fundamentally illuminated” by the wisdom behind its slogan MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa.
“Meaning — DepEd's programs and reforms are intentionally tailored to produce competent, job-ready, active, responsible, and patriotic citizens,” she added.
MATATAG curriculum
Duterte explained that the MATATAG curriculum will be “at the heart” of the DepEd.
The MA stands for “Makabagong kurikulum na napapanahon” to give “relevant” knowledge and “responsive” skills for globalization.
“The knowledge that we are offering our learners should be relevant, and the skills being developed are applicable and responsive to the demands of a world that constantly evolves,” Duterte said.
TA stands for “Talino na mula sa isip at puso” which, Duterte said, “shall promote a balance between intelligence of the mind and maturity of the heart.”
“It is important that our learners are mentally prepared to face the challenges of the world and equally important that they are also emotionally ready to navigate its complexities,” she added.
The other TA stands for “Tapang na humarap sa ano man ang hamon sa buhay” which will help “harness our deep sense of identity as Filipinos in facing uncertainties and adversities as a nation.”
“We hope to witness our learners grow into patriotic citizens,” she explained.
Lastly, the G stands for “Galing ng Pilipino, nangingibabaw sa mundo” which aims to “produce learners who are ready and equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills needed for them to shine on the competitive world stage.”
In April, DepEd released the draft of the K to 10 curriculum guide.

In the Shaping Paper, DepEd noted the need to re-examine and enhance the K to 12 curriculum to “identify points for improvement to ultimately lift the quality of basic education.”
To get feedback from education stakeholders, DepEd released the draft of the reviewed K to 10 curriculum and opened it for comments and suggestions, among others.
